Car Insurance Rates for Teenagers - 5 Saving Tips

So you just turned of driving age and your mom and dad gave you the keys to your very first car. Now it's time to get insurance.

You should be aware that insurance rates are based on how likely you are "statistically" going to get into a wreck. For first time drivers, this can be a hassle. Unfortunately statistics aren't on your side. The risk of getting into an accident is nearly 4 times higher for first time drivers (16-19 year olds) than for older more experienced drivers.

Luckily there are things you and your parents can do to save you money on your insurance rates.

Get good grades. Most insurance companies will offer a significant discount (sometimes as high as 25%) for students who can maintain a B average or better.

Complete a Drivers Education courses (Drivers Ed). Taking a formal training course will usually save you on your insurance premiums. Discounts up to 15% can be realized up to the age of 21.

Complete a NYS Defensive Driving or Accident Prevention course (DDC). Taking a formal training course will usually save you on your insurance premiums. Discounts up to 10% on your liability and collision premiums can be realized. Additionally, this course can be renewed every 3 years.

Get an "insurance friendly" car. Insurance companies rate cars on their "safeness" according to many factors. These factors can include seatbelts, airbags, car value, and engine type. Ask your agent what cars they deem "safe" to save you the most money.
Shopping around! As with anything, it's best to shop around for the best deal. There is no one set price for insurance rates. Shopping with Lighthouse Insurance is easy, just complete our online form and receive quotes from several carriers. Choose the one that's right for you.
