Liability coverage

  • Covers injuries or damage you cause to other people and other property while operating your vehicle.
  • The Limit of Liability is the maximum amount paid, regardless of the number of insured persons in a car accident.
  • Policies can be written either for Single Limit or Split Limit Coverage.
  • Single Limit applies for bodily injury per person, per accident and property damage collectively for a single occurrence.
  • Split Limit coverage is a separate limit applicable for each variable - bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage per accident. The bodily injury portion of this coverage is the most crucial component of your auto insurance. Liability claims against you for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering when you fatally injure or harm someone in an accident can easily mount to thousands of dollars, so you don't want to be underinsured.

Property damage claims can also be large, especially if you cause severe damage to someone else's expensive car. Additionally, you could strike and damage other property, such as a store, business, home or utility pole, resulting in very large losses. In New York State, the required minimum liability coverage doesn't come close to covering the possible costs associated with a serious auto accident. Thus, you may have to pay part of the claim out of your own pocket if you're sued. This is particularly dangerous if you own a home or maintain control of other large assets. Lighthouse advises its clients to carry both bodily injury and property damage liability coverage's well beyond state minimums.

Medical Payments Coverage

  • Medical Payments or "Med Pay" Coverage pays for eligible medical expenses (such as physicians, hospital bills, funeral costs, and compensation) related to injuries sustained in a covered car accident for you or your passengers. This type of auto insurance coverage is paid-up to a specified limit, regardless of fault.
  • Medical Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is a broader form of Med Pay. It pays for medical bills and other losses passengers in your car may have suffered. It also covers injured pedestrians.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage is designed to cover you for any bodily injury you sustain in an auto accident caused by a driver who is uninsured or has inadequate insurance. Insurance extends to a predetermined limit of insurance coverage you have selected.

Physical Damage Coverage

  • Physical Damage Coverage - a.k.a. Comprehensive and Collision - insures you for damage or loss of your car due to an accident.
  • Comprehensive and Collision are optional, but most auto lease and finance agreements require you to purchase both types of coverage to guarantee repair or replacement of a damaged or lost vehicle.
  • Comprehensive Coverage protects you against damages to your vehicle due to fire, hail, flood, theft or impact with an animal.
  • Collision Coverage protects you against damage to your vehicle when it collides with another object, such as another vehicle or a pole.

Auto Insurance Coverage Costs

Choosing the appropriate level of coverage depends on a number of factors, including the value of your vehicle, the value of assets you must protect, the amount of money you can afford to pay out-of-pocket, and your risk tolerance. If a claim against you exceeds your coverage limits, you will be personally responsible for the exceeding amount.

Lighthouse Insurance can tailor a cost-effective policy with coverage amounts to fit your needs. To calculate your premium costs, your insurer will consider the coverage levels you select and will use statistical information about you and your car.
