Watercraft & Boating Safety Tips
Following some very basic watercraft safety suggestions can save lives and money.
| Have a personal floatation device (PFD) for every person on board. | |
| Recognize that the waterways are becoming more crowded and adjust speeds accordingly. | |
| Never mix alcohol or other substances when boating. | |
| All operators of personal watercraft (PWC) will be required to earn a safety certificate before they may operate. In addition to teaching the particulars of handling a PWC, this course will also be beneficial for any boater wishing to learn more about the rules of the road, reading buoys, boat handling, and other boating safety related topics. | |
| Personal Watercraft Education is becoming mandatory: As of 1/1/2004 anyone operating a PWC will need to complete the course. |
A safety certificate may be obtained by completing the New York State Boating Course, sponsored by the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. Volunteer instructors throughout the state teach the course free of charge. A certificate may also be obtained through either the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadron. For information on where to take courses, Call 1-800-336-BOAT.
