Watercraft & Boating Safety Tips

Following some very basic watercraft safety suggestions can save lives and money.

	Have a personal floatation device (PFD) for every person on board.
	Recognize that the waterways are becoming more crowded and adjust speeds accordingly.
	Never mix alcohol or other substances when boating.
	All operators of personal watercraft (PWC) will be required to earn a safety certificate before they may operate. In addition to teaching the particulars of handling a PWC, this course will also be beneficial for any boater wishing to learn more about the rules of the road, reading buoys, boat handling, and other boating safety related topics.
	Personal Watercraft Education is becoming mandatory: As of 1/1/2004 anyone operating a PWC will need to complete the course.

A safety certificate may be obtained by completing the New York State Boating Course, sponsored by the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation. Volunteer instructors throughout the state teach the course free of charge. A certificate may also be obtained through either the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadron.
